The Vancouver Scrum

On the move!

Agh! You’re still here? My new site and weblog, ianking.ca is now up and running; new posts are building up over there, never to be mirrored here. Go! What are you waiting for? All the stuff worth keeping has been migrated over to the new server, and I don’t anticipate making any more posts here.

Bloggers and webmasters: Update your links! Simply replace vancouverscrum.blogspot.com with www.ianking.ca in your blogrolls or bookmarks to point to the new site. Old posts will remain on this server for as long as the people at Blogger/Google allow them to remain; unfortunately, I’m not going to bother to come up with any way of converting permalinks on this blog to their corresponding posts on the new site. Yes, I plead laziness. I also realize the irony of switching away from Blogger just it starts to add features that the demanding blog nerds insist upon.

Thanks for reading and linking, and see you over at ianking.ca!

Gotta Love Ralph, not

Must be election time in Alberta: Ralph Klein’s attacking disability payment recipients. Odds are, that he wasn’t thinking when he said this…

In the same speech where he stressed the need to help the vulnerable, Klein said he was at a recent sod-turning where two women were “yipping about AISH payments.”

“They didn’t look severely handicapped to me, I tell you that for sure,” the premier said to a titter of laughter. “They both had cigarettes dangling from their mouth and cowboy hats.”

...but he did get a positive reaction from the crowd.

Not to get all huffy over this stuff—I rarely do, but I can tell you that there are a lot of people out there that don’t “look disabled” that frankly are fairly severely disabled.

Trouble is that despite putting out a bunch of apologia, that sort of line plays well with the I’m-all-right-Jack crowd that forms that basis of Klein’s support. Oh, to be a conservative politician in one-party Alberta.
Comments:
You said it. More!

In Edmonton they love the premier, abertans do what they can do... now homeless shelters do not bother me, does your conscience bother you?

Or some simple-minded drivel like that that plays well with the angry self-reliant crowd, perennial victims of malicious moochers and deranged deadbeats at every turn.

Klein is a disgrace to the Human Race. But he's painted blue so he gets re-elected easy enough... Albertan elections are less competative than General Elections in the Welsh Valleys (O.K that's an exaggeration. But only just)

...and while all most british columbians like you can do is to continue to gripe, moan and panhandle, more jobs are being produced in Alberta, Albertans are enjoying a higher standard of living, living in better communities with less crime (with longer, straighter roads, why aren't Albertans killing each other street racing?)and have more after-tax income and still pay no PST.

it never ceases to amaze me how british columbians (re: Vancouverites) can be so smug and project this feeling of superiority when talking about Alberta and Klein. what has the Left in BC done for you lately? Or the Right? Or the Middle for that matter. It must really drive you nuts that BC (re: Vancouver) continues to spiral into becoming a complete shithole while Alberta continues to kick ass.

but hey- at least you've got that swanky safe injection site

Lemme get this straight -- Alberta's recent good fortune provides all the excuse for Ralph Klein to attack those who have almost no ability to defend themselves? I don't think so. Regardless of whether Alberta's up or down, there is no excuse for tyhat sort of execrable behaviour. He oughta pick on someone his own size, for exapmple rival political parties, rather than playing to some mouth-breathers' cheap-assed prejudices about disability recipients.

(Even the Klein Fan Club at the Calgary Horrid editorial board gingerluy criticised him on it. What doesn that say?)

As for livability: just wait until you see what sprawl is going to do to Calgary in the next 30 years...
